How to relieve headache symptoms?
We all know that when a headache hits, there is sometimes just no way out of it. And we understand that when you’re having a busy day, you don’t have time to let a headache stop you in your tracks.
There are many reasons as to what can cause a headache. If your headaches are frequent and symptoms continue, book in to see your Doctor or Chiropractor. In the meantime, here is a checklist of things you could do to help you try and relieve the headaches symptoms straight away.
-
Hydrate
Dehydration is one of the most common causes of headaches, be sure to drink a few glasses of water as soon as you feel a headache coming on and continue to do so throughout the day.
A rough guide of how much water to drink each day is 30mL per kilogram of body weight.
- Example: Dr Mike is 84kg so 84x30mL=2.52L.
Each persons hydration requirements will increase depending on activity levels and other environmental conditions such as an air-conditioned office or high ambient humidity. Dehydration may trigger headaches so avoid caffeine or alcohol and replace with herbal tea.
-
Turn off
Sources of noise and light like a TV, computer, tablet or smart phone can have an impact. Long term, you could benefit from using our red lense glasses when spending time in front of a screen. They block the blue light from screens, minimising stimulation of the nervous system.
Alternatively using software that is available to download for your computer and applications for your phone, like NightShift and Twilight for Apple and Android devices. These Apps reduce the blue light output from our screens.
-
Rest in a dark, quiet room.
You may be sensitive to light or sound and to balance this out you can sit or lie down in a dimly lit room. Close your eyes and try to relax your back, neck, and shoulders.
If this is not an option while you’re at work, reducing light and sound input by using polarised sunglasses if you’re outside or red lensed glasses if you sit at a computer all day. Using earplugs can also help to reduce sound input that may enhance headache symptoms.
-
Meditation
Do a deep breathing exercise. Deep breathing can help you relax and reduce any stress in your body, including your head. Take slow, even breaths and try to relax.
If you have an Apple watch you can use the Breathe function. Alternatively download the Breathe2relax App available for both Apple and Android.
-
Essential oils
Peppermint Oil can have a soothing effect when massaged into your temples, forehead and the back of your jaw. Just be sure to test it first on your skin before applying it. Alternatively, you can use Lavender Oil in the same locations or a few drops in an oil burner or diffuser.
